GLOBAL SOUNDS on JOY 94.9

From Toronto, Canada

It's Pride Day in Toronto. We're watching the parade on TV because it was raining up to the time it started. The rain stopped and everyone (1 million people expected, many from outside the city and Canada) seems to be having a great time. Unlike Melbourne, where we have a march, Toronto celebrates what the LGBTIQ community has accomplished, like same-sex marriage, but not forgetting that there's still more work to do.

This year's theme is "Can't Stop, Won't Stop."
The parade is expected to last 2:30 hours with over 300 entries representing the "LGBTTIQQ2S (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Transgendered, Intersexual, Queer, Questioning, 2-Spirited) communities through our amazing stories of equality, human rights, respect, diversity, honour, love and acceptance. "
Aside from the main parade there was the Trans Pride March on Friday evening and the Dyke March on Saturday. Much more still to come in the "Gay Village" at Church and Wellesley where an area of 8 by 3 blocks have been closed since Friday evening. Among other things they have 5 stages with all sorts of entertainment.

Cheers from Toronto
Paul and Simon

Wholesome, Nourishing, Nutritious, Warming... Alphabet Soup.

Things have been simmering away and the annual JOY 94.9 radiothon is rapidly coming to the boil.

Kicking off on Friday June 12 and running on-air for 10 days the JOY 94.9 Alphabet Soup Radiothon will ensure the station remains a staple in the communityʼs media diet. The station provides an independent voice for the diverse GLBTIQ Community (often referred to as “the alphabet soup” community) by providing a healthy diet of Music, Talks shows, News & Current Affairs and Arts & Culture programs.

The station receives no re-current government funding and is proudly self funded through on-air sponsorship and more importantly memberships and donations.

Every soup needs seasoning so weʼve got a range of great prizes available to all new and renewing members, total prize pool is over $30,000. Whatever your taste weʼve got something for you.

Help keep JOY 94.9 in the radio food chain and support the station, because we canʼt make a complete alphabet soup without U.

Global Sounds #289 Wednesday 10-06-09

Portugal Day , marks the date of Luís de Camões' death in June 10, 1580 and is Portugal's National Day. Camões wrote the Lusiads, Portugal's national epic poem celebrating Portuguese history and achievements. Although it is only officially celebrated in Portugal, Portuguese descendents throughout the world celebrate the holiday too. Naturally then, on this show, we'll play music from Portugal and Portuguese artists.

In addition, tunes from the new ROUGH GUIDE TO MERENGUE DANCE
