Show #284 Wednesday 06-05-09
Sunday 10th May, 2009
In this show, we'll play music, as a a tribute to mothers (we all had one) with songs mentioning Mama, Mother and Mummy. Some joyous, some sad, for mothers no longer with us, and some for mothers who have lost their children and children who have lost their mothers.
The modern Mother's Day holiday (this year May 10th, 2009) was created by Anna Jarvis as a day for each family to honor its mother. Anna Jarvis was born in the tiny town of Webster in Taylor County, West Virginia. On May 12, 1907, two years after her mother's death, she held a memorial to her mother and thereafter embarked upon a campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday. She succeeded in making this nationally recognized in 1914. and it's now celebrated on various days in many places around the world. However, Anna Marie Jarvis never married and had no children.
